Smoking is an important cause of health inequalities: the poorer you are, the more likely you are to smoke. You're also less likely to quit and more likely to die from smoking related causes when you have little or no money.

Last century an estimated 100 million people died because of tobacco use. And if current smoking trends continue, smoking will kill another 1,000 million people this century.
